Yard Sales and Storage

Even people that use self-storage units can end up filling up their space with more and more stuff. Often the best option for freeing up space and making a few dollars at the same time is a yard sale. It's a weekend activity you'll see in every neighborhood across the country, but it takes some planning to pull off correctly.

It can be a little difficult to arrange everything when the items are in a storage unit. You'll have to take everything off-site for the yard sale. However, there's plenty of planning you can do onsite. Here are a few ideas for arranging your yard sale.

Yard Sale Preparation

  • Use Storage to Accumulate Sale Items
Plenty of people use storage units to hang on to useful items they've replaced or just don't need. It's a great idea to go ahead and start arranging personal property with a future yard sale in mind. Keep things organized and protected so that when the time for a yard sale comes around, you'll already have a good idea of what's stored and the condition it's in.
  • Price as You Go
This goes hand-in-hand with the first tip. You can give things prices even before you stow them away in your storage unit. Price is also an excellent way to organize items within the unit. Label boxes with the prices, and you can simply fill up the boxes over time.
  • Build up an "Inventory"
If you're going to go through the trouble of organizing and holding a yard sale, make sure it's worth the time invested. Find the right storage unit size at the right price and start accumulating enough sellables to make the yard sale a success. You might even consider getting other family members, friends, or neighbors in on the action. When you have lots of people contributing valuable things, you'll be surprised at how quickly you can fill up your unit before the yard sale.
